James Helliwell is Commercial Director at Njord Solutions, where he is responsible for leading client engagement, commercial strategy, and the adoption of maritime energy efficiency solutions across global shipping markets.
James joined Njord following V.Group’s acquisition and integration of Njord Solutions into its decarbonisation platform. Prior to this transition, he held the role of Commercial Director for Decarbonisation at V.Group, where he was responsible for building and scaling the company’s decarbonisation offering.
Prior to V.Group, James worked for Shell for 7 years in London, Singapore and Houston. James spent most of his Shell career as a Marine Engineer and Project Manager delivering energy efficiency retrofits to Shell’s LNG carrier fleet. He delivered the retrofit of air lubrication systems, ballast water treatment systems and hydrogen fuel cell retrofit projects for Shell. Latterly James worked in a commercial role as Integrated Deal Manager for Shell’s US and Canada Lubricants business based in Houston.
At Njord, he works closely with shipowners, charterers, and fleet managers to identify opportunities for emissions reduction, regulatory compliance, and operational improvement through energy efficiency technologies and data-driven decision support.
James focuses on building long-term partnerships with maritime stakeholders, supporting the deployment of scalable solutions that improve fleet performance and deliver measurable commercial value.
His work sits at the intersection of decarbonization strategy, client advisory, and maritime technology adoption.
James holds a master's degree in marine engineering from Newcastle University and post graduate qualification in hydrogen safety from Ulster University, is a chartered marine engineer and certified project manager.
