Panama Takes Lead on Maritime Decarbonization with Technology Screenings

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is advancing its sustainability efforts by conducting Technology Screenings on vessels within its fleet. These screenings aim to identify technologies that can significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions, supporting ACP’s broader decarbonization goals, using Njord Technology Screenings.

The selected technologies will be evaluated for their potential to improve vessel efficiency and lower environmental impact. This initiative is part of ACP’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and its leadership in driving sustainable practices across the global shipping industry. The goal is to inspire wider adoption across the registry and beyond by showing what’s technically and commercially viable today.

“We’re charting a course toward a more sustainable maritime future. By applying cutting-edge solutions to our own fleet, we aim to spark transformation well beyond the Canal—across the entire global shipping community.” Ilya R. Espino de Marotta, Deputy Administrator and Chief Sustainability Officer.

The goal is to inspire wider adoption across the registry and beyond by showing what’s technically and commercially viable today.

“We’re pleased to support the Panama Canal Authority,” said Frederik Pind, Managing Director at Njord. “Their initiatives set a strong example, and we’re glad to contribute to their efforts to drive practical progress on decarbonization”.

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is the autonomous agency of the Government of Panama responsible for the operation, administration, and modernization of the Panama Canal. Its mission is to contribute sustainably to Panama’s prosperity by connecting production with global markets, adding value for customers, and driving progress through innovation and environmental stewardship.
